K-ON! episode #11
Summary
The school festival moves closer. The Light Music Club will perform again, but several problems crop up, the biggest one being a dispute between Ritsu Tainaka and Mio Akiyama.
Plot
The episode starts with Azusa narrating in retrospective the events just before the school's festival.
Sitting in the Light Music Club room, Azusa looks forward to her first live performance and asks the other members about the concert last year. Mio, embarrassed over her accident last time, tries to prevent anyone from telling Azusa what happened, but Sawako orders Ritsu and Yui to subdue her while she shows the footage of the performance. The delicate scene completely takes Azusa by surprise.
While they continue to discuss the old festival, Nodoka shows up with the urgent news that the club still has to turn in an application to use the auditorium. The clubs sits down to fill the application out, causing Azusa to notice that the band doesn't have a name yet. Every immediately proposed name fails to stick, so the band decides to think it over a bit longer and start practicing instead. This reminds Yui that her guitar has not been sounding right recently, so they take a look at it. It is revealed Yui never really took proper care of the guitar, never changing the strings or cleaning the guitar. Unwilling to let Yui practice with her guitar in its current condition, the club decides to visit a music store on their way home.
When Yui presents her guitar to the music store employee, the man is shocked by the guitar's condition but still offers to perform maintenance. After the maintenance is done, Yui is overjoyed to see her guitar in such good condition again and happily names her "Giita". Her mirth evaporates instantly when she learns that maintenance costs money, something she's fresh out of. Recognizing the problem, Tsumugi attempts to cover for Yui, only for the employee to insist that the maintenance is on the house as thanks for the good working conditions Tsumugi's father, who owns the store, provides for them.
Grateful that they were able to avoid any real trouble, the club tries to leave the store. Mio, who spent the whole time admiring rare lefty guitars, refuses to leave. As Ritsu tries to drag her out, she falls and lands on the ground, causing everyone to notice the tense atmosphere between the two childhood friends.
After the shopping, Ritsu suggests drinking tea somewhere nearby, but Yui already has a date with Nodoka. When Mio asks to come along since Nodoka is her classmate, Ritsu starts getting envious and begins to stalk them with Azusa and Tsumugi getting dragged along. When Ritsu reveals to Mio that she followed her, she begins to get on Mio's nerves.
The next day at school, Ritsu forces Mio to stop eating lunch with Nodoka and drags her to the clubroom to practice instead. There, rather then practicing, she teases Mio in every way she can think of. Now completely fed up, Mio announces that she's going back to the classroom to eat lunch. Instead of stopping her, Ritsu cynically mocks Mio for prioritizing her fun lunch with Nodoka over club activities. The atmosphere turns out to be too intense for Tsumugi and Azusa, who both frantically try to calm things down. As Azusa is just one wrong move away from tears, Mio and Ritsu stop fighting guiltily and suggest practicing instead. However, Ritsu's drumming lacks so much power it is barely audible, leading her to leave the club all of a sudden, claiming that she doesn't feel well.
For the next two days, Ritsu doesn't visit the clubroom. The club discusses what to do if she won't show up for the school festival and consider getting a temporary replacement. While Sawako blames Mio for showing Ritsu the cold shoulder, Tsumugi suggests having faith in her friend and waiting for Ritsu to come back.
The next day, Mio visits Ritsu's, Yui's and Tsumugi's class and finds out that Ritsu is sick at home with a fever. After school, she visits Ritsu at home and the two make up again. After some time, Yui, Tsumugi and Azusa come to visit too, but Ritsu is already asleep. Inspired by the sight, Yui falls asleep next to Ritsu as well.
Ritsu recovers overnight and comes back to school the next day with her usual power. The enthusiasm over Ritsu's return to form is instantly crushed by Nodoka, who bursts into the room to remind the club that they completely forgot to fill out the auditorium application.
Desperate for a second chance, the band visits the student council room to try to convince its president, Megumi Sokabe to let them perform anyways. As Ritsu's pleas seem to be ineffective, Nodoka vouches for the club, citing Ritsu's illness as the reason the form wasn't filled out on time. This convinces Megumi to give the club until the end of the day. Elated by Nodoka's support, Ritsu reconciles with her immediately.
Back at the clubroom, the members try to decide on a name for the band again. As time slips away with no progress made, Sawako's patience is exhausted and she decides on a name on behalf of the band, "Ho-kago Tea Time", in reference to the club's habit of indulging in after school tea time. Although somewhat disappointed that they were unable to decide on the name by themselves, nobody has any objections to the name, and they celebrate the band having a name with a group picture. Just before the episode ends, Yui suddenly sneezes, leading everybody to worry anew for the club's success in the imminent festival.
