Reminded by your fix of those appearances just now, I had an idea a while back to combine the song pages that are all the same song. It's not a very reader-friendly way to do it with every slightly different version having its own page.
Instead of 22 different Fuwa Fuwa Time pages (yes, there are twenty-two), we would have one, with entries on it for each version. It would be far easier to explain the differences between them this way, for the most part they can all be summed up in a single sentence, like "version X adds Y instrument and appears in Z place", and it would be a lot less confusing for readers here (speaking from experience).
For the page, I think it should looks pretty much exactly like a character page. The "main" album artwork can appear with the info box below it, and a brief paragraph of the song followed by a small entry for each version with each of their album artwork, just like the ED Attire section.
Yeah, I too presume that's the best way. It's just very much work yet again and we haven't even finished the Giita-thing. Let's get that one out of the way first before starting another projects that goes around the entire wiki, shall we? :)
Well, I took care of most of the Giita-stuff...now we have to wait for the server to catch up so the removed "macron-i"s should not appear in the search anymore. Moving on...
I ignored changing the instrumental versions, as well as the Game mixes since, as far as I understood it, we will merge them with the "main" song article anyway, right? That being said, what lies ahead of us is the following:
1. Merge the content from the variant versions with the main article.
2. Hunt down and replace the links to the variants to the one that links to the main article. On every other page. At the same time, maybe restructure huge pages like the "List of K-ON! Albums" one.
3. Get rid of the disambiguation pages as we don't need them anymore. Not sure if some stay, let's wait for the respective content.
4. Fix the templates (I will contact DS for this one).
5. Take care of those categories that aren't needed anymore.
6. Delete all the variant articles + all the redirects.
All in all, much work. We could split the work, like maybe one of us focuses on the first "Character Image Songs" or something like that...
Yep, it's a big project, I was mainly looking to get an okay to do this. Also, while we're at it, some of the song titles need small changes. Some of these come from the katakana being translated into all caps for no apparent reason. These are what they should be:
I'm going to do a test run on the Fude Pen ~Ballpoint Pen~ page, but I'm not going to do any renaming or delete the other articles yet and I'm going to leave the rest of the page for now too (intro paragraph and infobox), I'm just testing the layout.
I'm not good with templates and such, so I'll just use the character attire layout and we can change it if people want it changed.
As for the lyrics, almost every single song had identical lyrics no matter the version, the only real different one I can think of is the movie version of Gohan, with the added London chorus, so I think we should just use one standard lyric set and note when it's different in a particular version, since that's so rare.
I like what you did with the Fude Pen page. It looks very nice! I also agree with you about the lyrics, as they do seem to be all pretty much identical for each version. The only real difference between the versions that I notice is that the instruments that are played can be different.
I like it in general, but I am unsure if we need such an elaborate explanation for every variation. We could also have a short description in which we state some basic facts and highlight the differences compared to the original version.
Edit: I support the idea with the lyrics btw. We could note somewhere that the lyrics could change a bit from variant to variant.
Alright, I did a test run myself and realised that an elaborate explanation isn't bad at all. Unfortunately, I can't be much help there as I have no idea about music.
How about this? I go through pages and merge them together like we did with the two songs now. Then, you can add further information about the differences, musical refinements etc. while taking care of some songs entirely. I will then get rid of links, disambiguations and so on. How does it sound?
It looks good if we're going make them all look like the Fude Pen page. As for everything else, I have testing this week so will probably not be of much assistance. Also, I do not believe every version needs an explanation of how or why it is different since the title mostly says it all, and it's not explained aside "an alternative version" which is simple enough.
More info isn't bad, and they're not that long. I kept them as short as possible while still saying what the differences are, any shorter and stuff would be missed. This is a show about music after all, as much as they don't get around to playing any most of the time. Also, most songs wouldn't need descriptions this long because most alternates are instrumental versions, and Fude Pen probably has the most diverse versions (different singers, different guitar players, YuiAzu version). Most pages will be much simpler.
That sounds good Norleon, I'm not great with the technical side of wiki stuff, that section is just copy-pasted from the ED attire section, but I'd have no idea how to do something like resize it. Filling out all the info is something I can definitely do though :)
My plan is to go down the album list, now it really comes in handy (wohoo)! Be sure to check every edit I do on the main articles to enhance needed sections and correct mistakes I do (seeing Vimitsu's corrections on articles I wrote shows that I still do much more mistakes than acceptable. :D )
Sounds good. I like what you did with the Curry page, making the standard version the opening part of the page and not in the table. Also, I'm not a fan of how out of universe the opening paragraphs are, (published by Pony Canyon, real release date, and worst of all "The song was sung by Yui Hirasawa's voice actress Aki Toyosaki"). I'm not against the info, it's good to have, but I think it should stay in the infobox.
There, I'm happy with Fude Pen now, how does it look to you guys?
So you mean the articles should focus more on the "K-ON-universe" instead of the "real world"? I don't mind, but what should we do with those that never appeared in the series outside of the openings and endings?
K-ON! Wiki is for all K-ON!, or at least what we can get our hands on. Sure the anime is the craze, but we can't leave everything else. So, it just needs to be summarized in the fact that they're K-ON! songs
Don't go overboard guys, I meant more of our wording, as in "sung by Yui Hirasawa" instead of "sung by Yui Hirasawa's voice actress Aki Toyosaki".
The anime follows the manga very closely, the differences are usually minor, so as far as I'm concerned it's all one universe unless two facts directly contradict each other, then we would note that, though even that is usually just a Trivia note.
Using NO, Thank You! as an example, sure it doesn't appear in the show's universe, but we should still note it as being performed by Ho-kago Tea Time and sung by Mio Akiyama as opposed to the "real" performers, same goes for character songs and such.
Really, don't worry about it, it's just a slight rewording thing, mentioning it might have made it seem like a bigger deal than it is. Read the opening paragraph to Fude Pen that I just rewrote to see what I mean.
I am starting to get the hang of it. When we go over it at the end, I also want to take a closer look at the lyrics, as well as some names of the composers and most importantly, the albums itself. For example, the "Yarouyo" in K-ON!! Official Band Yarouyo!! ~Let's MUSIC!! ~. should be written "Yarōyo". However, these are little things that can wait until we raided all articles for the first time.
Wow. That was actually just a random suggestion. Anyway, I just had a look through the wikis for KyoAni animes. Every "major" KyoAni anime has a Wikia wiki, and most are reasonably active enough so that they can be contacted.
First, though, we should take care of affiliating the K-ON! wiki with the Free! wiki.
It's here under "file history". I think waiting a bit is the safest option, the server probably just needs some time to adopt the change. Recently, it seems to me that Wikia needs more time to show changes in general.
That aside, what do you think about the new "manga" images in the infoboxes?
