Risa And Her Happy Friends (
History[]
After watching a performance by the Sakuragaoka High School Light Music Club during the School Festival, Yukari Sakuma and Kaede Shimizu were inspired to start their own band in their own School's Light Music Club. A Light Music Club at Hikarigaoka High School didn't exist, but a Light Music Appreciation Society did. Maho Sawabe ended up joining them too after somewhat having the idea forced upon her, but would later admit she did join of her own free will. Whilst the Light Music Appreciation Society already had a member present, Riko Satou, she would only teach the 3 girls and not join them as a fellow band member as she waited for the hopeful return of her previous band member(s).
Shortly after Shinano Iwasaki would return to the Light Music Appreciation Society. She would also only teach the 3 girls and not join them as a fellow band member as she stated that "Riko is mine".
The 3 girls would finally perform together at the end of the winter break after Shinano spontaneously thought of doing a Battle of the Bands with Riko & Shinano vs Yukari, Kaede & Maho. The 3 girls performed a cover of Fuwa Fuwa Time with no Piano/Vocals. The 3 girls emotionally lost against Riko & Shinano who performed an acoustic cover/arrangement of their cover of Fuwa Fuwa Time.
Not long after Kano Yamamoto would re-join the Light Music Appreciation Society. Just like Riko and Shinano, she would teach the 3 girls the best she can, and not join them as a fellow band member as she wanted to be in a band with Riko and Shinano again.
A few months after, the school year ended and new students would enrol into Hikarigaoka High School. The 3 girls would perform again at the New Student Welcoming Ceremony, which caught the eye of Risa Kawabe and Ranka Ohtake. Who decided to join the Hikarigaoka High School Light Music Appreciation Society. Risa wanting to be a vocalist and Ranka wanted to play guitar after thinking Maho was cool during the performance.
After a few more months of the girls getting much friendlier with each other, as well as the Light Music Appreciation Society becoming a proper Light Music Club, Ranka was the first to ask if she could be Kaede's girlfriend. Then after realizing she mistakenly said the wrong thing, she asked if she could join Yukari, Kaede & Maho's band. The Yukari and Maho were elated for her to join and Risa joined too shortly after.
A day or so later the girls would have lunch together to brainstorm ideas for a possible band name. During which Risa would jokingly talk about how effortless the band seems to be with them starting to play instruments after listening to a band they can't even remember the name of, with that band being from some other school, they formed a band because they sat next to each other in class and even after more than half a year still didn't have a vocalist nor band name. Which shortly after Risa jokingly suggests Risa And Her Happy Friends (
A couple months after during Summer break, Shinano decided to do another Battle of the bands during the summer training camp, Riko, Shinano & Kano vs Yukari, Kaede, Maho, Risa & Ranka. The girls mainly forget about it with the 2 bands separated for a while with Yukari & co spending time at the summer training camp (actually the Basket Ball training camp) and Shinano & co at home with Shinano having to take required supplementary classes due to her failing a bunch of tests. On the 3rd to last day of the summer training camp, Shinano messages Yukari & co up to reminds them of the Battle of the bands and that each band has to bring a new song to the battle. Yukari & co then spend all day and night thinking of lyrics for the song, with Yukari eventually taking lead and creating "Shuffle". On the 2nd to last day of the summer training camp Shinano & co would finally arrive. Karin and the other Basketball club members set the gym up as a stage and a proper battle of the bands began with "Risa And Her Happy Friends (Temporary)" going first, to Risa's shock that the name is being used. Risa And Her Happy Friends (Temporary) lost to Riko, Shinano & Kano with the votes being 24:18. Yukari would find and comfort a lone crying Risa. Once both bands mingled together Risa would state to Shinano that next time they'll beat them.
During the rest of the summer break the members of Risa And Her Happy Friends (Temporary) would try improve their musical skills/knowledge in different ways. Kaede whilst in a daze shortly after coming of the bus from the summer training camp managed to bump into a girl with long black hair playing a left-handed bass. After a weird confusing conversation with the black hair girl, she somehow helped Kaede try understand what music is by "thinking about your friends while playing". Ranka would get a part time job at the family restaurant 'Kabazeriya' to earn money for a new guitar. Maho would work part time at the "Kotobuki's Musical Instruments/10GIA(anime)" to try further develop her understanding for Music, along side a joyful but sometimes scary girl called Tsumugi Kotobuki.
Near the end of the Summer break, Yukari decided to beat Shinano & co at the school festival they'd need to write one more song. This time though Yukari wanted everyone to write what they like about the other four members on a piece of paper, which would be combined into a song. After Ranka worrying how embarrassing it would be, it was decided to be anonymous. Maho and Kaede submitted theirs shortly after, but Risa wanted to go on a "date" with Yukari before giving her the notes, which during the whole time was scoring Yukari with imaginary points. Ranka was the last one to give her notes as she struggled with it until the first day of the new school term. Karin was given the role to rewrite the notes down due to avoid anyone's handwriting being noticed and in doing so revealed some of Ranka's notes by saying them out loud. In the end, the currently unnamed song was made

- While originally suggested by Risa as a joke, the name has currently stuck around.
- The band's name Risa And Her Happy Friends (
リサとゆかいな仲間たち ) can slightly vary in translation due to the "ゆかい" segment e.g Happy, Funny, Fun, Friendly, Pleasant, Merry. - As of right now there is no official English translation for the band's name.
- The band name is almost identical to one Yui suggested before they officially became Ho-kago Tea Time. Yui suggested Hirasawa Yui to yukai na nakama tachi (
平沢唯と愉快な仲間たち ), whilst Risa suggest Risa to yukai na nakama tachi (リサとゆかいな仲間たち ) with the only difference being Risa just has her first name and the yukai is in Hiragana instead of Kanji.- Both of these appear to be references to The Meloncholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. In the anime, the "Series Composition" is credited to Suzumiya Haruhi to yukai na nakama tachi (
涼宮ハルヒと愉快な仲間たち ), the exact group name that Yui and Risa suggest albeit for the respective character's name being different.
